Gangdong-gu Replaces Aging Equipment at Rainwater Pump Station and Yukgapmun to Prevent Flooding Cheonho Rainwater Pumping Station

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is set to replace aging flood control facilities such as rainwater pumping stations and sluice gates in preparation for heavy summer rains and guerrilla downpours.

As it has become difficult to accurately predict the weather due to abnormal climate changes, the district aims to thoroughly prepare in advance to ensure the safety of its residents.

The targeted facilities are the Cheonho rainwater pumping station and the Godeok Interchange sluice gate. To this end, a budget of 1.304 billion KRW from the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been secured, with plans to complete the replacements by May.

The Cheonho rainwater pumping station, which is being refurbished this time, handles rainwater in the Cheonho-dong and Amsa-dong areas to prevent flooding. Designed considering a 30-year rainfall frequency, it can process 2,948 tons of rainwater per minute, withstanding heavy rainfalls of up to 95mm per hour. During heavy rains, the pumps operate to discharge rainwater into the Han River, but the motor pumps used for this purpose have aged and will be replaced.

Additionally, the aging sluice gate at the Godeok Interchange will also be refurbished. The sluice gate is a flood prevention gate that blocks river water from the Han River from entering the urban area when the river overflows due to heavy rain.

The hoists and sluice gates used to raise and lower the gates will be replaced to ensure the sluice gate functions properly.

A district official stated, “We will continue to secure budgets to sequentially replace aging flood control facilities and enhance flood prevention capabilities. We will do our best to effectively prevent flood damage during heavy rains and protect the precious lives and property of our residents.”
