'Biome' Helping Improve Skin Environment, Enhancing Hydration and Defense... Active Releases from Dr.Jart+ and More

The beauty industry, in search of beneficial ingredients, is turning its attention to skin microbiomes.

The microbiome, also known as the "second genome," is a compound word of "microbe" and "biome." As research has revealed that microbes have various effects on health, active development is underway across various fields, including cosmetics, food, and therapeutics.

The reason the beauty industry is focusing on the skin microbiome is that analyzing the dynamics of resident bacteria on the skin surface has made more scientific skin care possible. In particular, through a scientific approach to the skin, interest has shifted beyond simple nutrition supply to the skin environment itself.

Cosmetics incorporating microbiome-related technology are characterized by not only providing temporary care such as increased moisture retention and complexion improvement through key ingredient supply but also activating beneficial bacteria within our skin to create a skin environment that combats harmful bacteria, thereby improving skin constitution in the long term.

In other words, the core of skincare is not just simple nutrition supply but improving the skin’s immunity itself, enhancing skin moisture constitution, strengthening defense, and addressing the fundamental causes of skin health.

Especially, products for sensitive and delicate skin, centered on "derma cosmetics" brands, are actively launching products that maximize efficacy based on each brand’s unique skin science technology.

Dr. Jart+, leading the beauty market ‘Biome’ trend by improving skin moisture constitution beyond ingredients

'Biome' Helping Improve Skin Environment, Enhancing Hydration and Defense... Active Releases from Dr.Jart+ and More Dr. Jart+

The global derma cosmetic brand Dr. Jart+ has led market trends by launching the ‘Vital Hydra Solution Biome Line’ (hereafter Biome Line), which incorporates ‘skin microbiome’ technology.

While most microbiome or probiotics cosmetics distributed domestically have utilized intestinal or milk-derived lactic acid bacteria, the Biome Line contains Dr. Jart+’s proprietary ingredient ‘Moisture Biome™,’ a complex of skin microbiome fermentate, prebiotics, and postbiotics, which increases the proportion of skin microbiomes residing in the stratum corneum to cultivate moist and healthy skin.

Released in early June, the Biome Line consists of seven products including toner, essence, water cream, and moisture cream, offering diverse options depending on usage. Among them, the ‘Biome Moisture Cream’ contains 650,000 ppm of ‘Moisture Biome™,’ which not only provides hydration but also effectively improves the skin’s moisture constitution, helping to care for an ideal skin ecosystem. Additionally, the flagship product ‘Biome Essence’ ranked first in essence sales at Olive Young in June, successfully opening the door to the skin microbiome market. Dr. Jart+ plans to gradually expand its product lineup incorporating ‘skin microbiome’ technology centered around this Biome Line.

Easy-to-use probiotic mask, Illiyoon ‘Probiotics Skin Barrier Mask’

Illiyoon’s ‘Probiotics Skin Barrier Mask’ is a super-adhesive bio-cellulose sheet mask containing Lacto Skin Complex™?a lactic acid bacteria fermentation solubilized ingredient. Lacto Skin Complex™ strengthens the skin barrier and enhances skin defense, developed using green tea-derived lactic acid bacteria patented by Amorepacific. It also contains Yun Complex™ and madecassoside to care for moist skin and revitalize it.

High-moisture body lotion containing prebiotics, Aveeno ‘Skin Relief Moisturizing Body Lotion’

Products prominently featuring ‘probiotics’ and ‘prebiotics,’ already familiar through lactic acid bacteria, are also actively being launched.

Aveeno’s ‘Skin Relief Moisturizing Body Lotion’ is a high-moisture body lotion formulated with ‘oatmeal’ and ‘shea butter’ that absorbs into severely dry or sensitive skin, keeping it moist all day and quickly soothing it. Notably, the ‘prebiotics’ abundant in ‘oatmeal’ activate beneficial skin bacteria to normalize pH balance, helping not only with moisture but also promoting healthy skin. The low-irritation formula is fragrance-free, making it safe for sensitive skin.
