Gyeongsa-yeon Holds Joint Forum on 'How to Build a Biohealth Powerhouse'


[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] A forum will be held to diagnose the current status and challenges of South Korea's biohealth sector and explore ways to leap forward as a bio powerhouse.


The National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC), the National Science and Technology Council (NST), and the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) announced that on the 16th at 2 p.m., they will hold a joint forum titled "Bioeconomy Era, How to Achieve a Biohealth Powerhouse?" at the Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Members' Meeting Room.


Hosted by NRC, NST, and NAEK, and organized by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), this seminar will discuss policies and measures to strengthen national competitiveness in the biohealth industry, one of the next-generation key industries.


At the seminar, Professor Hayoung Park of Seoul National University will present on "Challenges of the Korean Biohealth Industry as a Next-Generation Key Industry," proposing infrastructure-related tasks for global commercialization and innovation in various AI-based biohealth industries.


Following this, Director Jangseong Kim of KRIBB will give a presentation titled "The Path to Becoming a Global Biohealth Powerhouse," reviewing the paradigm shift in global biohealth R&D and suggesting directions for R&D development to achieve a bio-based nation by 2030.


Director Myunghwa Lee of STEPI will present on "Current Status and Improvement Plans of Biohealth Policies," discussing policy improvements such as strengthening cooperation and policy coordination among biohealth ministries, solidifying institutional foundations, and expanding policy experiments.


In the subsequent presentation, Jungseon Seo, Chairman of the Korea Bio Association, will address "Digital Medical Revolution and Bio Regulatory Reform," outlining the shift of power from doctors to patients with the establishment of patient-centered precision medicine and proposing ways to create a data-driven bioindustry ecosystem in response to the maturity of the medical revolution.


Yoonseop Choi, CEO of Digital Healthcare Partners, will also present on "Digital Healthcare Startup Industry and Regulations," discussing the current status of Korea's digital healthcare startup industry and suggesting improvements to related regulations.


The panel discussion, chaired by Byunghwan Hyun, President of the Korean Society for Technology Innovation (Professor at Daejeon University), will include representatives from government ministries, academia, research institutes, and industry such as In-taek Lim, Director of Health Industry Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Health and Welfare; Professor Kwangpyo Kim of Kyung Hee University; Senior Research Fellow Yoonhee Choi of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade; Editorial Writer Hyunsil Ahn of The Korea Economic Daily; Vice President Miwon Son of Helixmith; and Dongho Lee, Head of AI New Drug Development Support Center at the Korea Pharmaceutical and Bio-Pharma Manufacturers Association. They will propose more practical strategies to foster an innovative ecosystem in the biohealth industry.


Sung Kyung-ryung, Chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, said, "To further enhance the medium- to long-term innovative growth momentum of the biohealth industry, the voices from the industrial field must be actively reflected in policies," adding, "I hope this seminar will serve as a catalyst for jointly considering ways to strengthen the competitiveness of the biohealth industry and unleash its infinite potential."
