Shin Chang-won, who was serving a life sentence for robbery and manslaughter at Busan Prison for eight years, escaped in January 1997 through a ventilation duct. Even while on the run, he continued to steal money and cars as needed, and it is known that he received help hiding by dating women.

At the time, the police force mobilized to capture Shin Chang-won was reported to be 970,000 people. Later, he was caught through a single tip-off call.

Shin Chang-won also revealed the reason he went down the wrong path in his own book. He confessed that after hearing harsh words such as "Why do you come to school when you didn't bring money?" and "Get out quickly" from his teacher in the 5th grade of elementary school, he started walking the path of a criminal.

Moreover, the police identified that his father's abuse and the presence of his stepmother also influenced his descent into crime. Shin Chang-won, who ran away from home since elementary school, was expelled three months after entering middle school and was taken to the police station for the first time at the age of 14.

Meanwhile, Shin Chang-won was additionally sentenced to 22 years and 6 months for charges including special escape.
