[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] The Kia Motors labor union announced that it will begin a five-day partial strike until the 17th in relation to the breakdown of the 2019 wage and collective bargaining negotiations.
According to the automotive industry on the 13th, the Kia Motors union held a dispute countermeasure committee meeting on the 10th and decided to start a partial strike from the 13th. The Kia Motors labor and management held additional main negotiations with the management until the 10th but failed to reach an agreement.
In the 16th main negotiation held at the Sohari plant on the 10th of last month, labor and management prepared a tentative agreement including a 40,000 KRW increase in base pay (including seniority step increase) and performance and incentive bonuses of 150% + 3.2 million KRW (including 200,000 KRW in traditional market gift certificates). They also agreed on a plan to partially increase allowances for workers on the finished car production line (S grade increased by 5,000 KRW) and to contribute 3 billion KRW to the social contribution fund.
However, the tentative agreement was rejected in a union member vote with 56% (15,159 people) opposing, leading to a partial strike on the 18th and 19th of last month.
Subsequently, main negotiations were held again on the 17th of last month, but since no agreement was reached, a partial strike took place on the 24th of the same month.
