[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Two Yonsei University professors accused of unfairly admitting a specific student through the university's special athletic admissions process have been arrested.

On the 8th, Yoo Chang-hoon, the warrant judge at the Seoul Western District Court, issued arrest warrants for two individuals, including Professor Lee from Yonsei University's Department of Physical Education, who are suspected of obstructing business, as requested by the prosecution.

Judge Yoo explained, "The criminal charges have been substantiated and the severity of the offense is significant," adding, "Considering the actions during the investigation, there is a risk of evidence tampering." For the other two professors for whom warrants were requested, he dismissed the warrants, stating, "Considering the circumstances and degree of involvement comprehensively, it is difficult to recognize the necessity of detention."

They are accused of participating as evaluators in the 2019 academic year Yonsei University Department of Physical Education special athletic admissions process, giving high scores to a specific student with poor athletic performance and evaluating based on a 'position' that was not part of the evaluation criteria.

In January of last year, the Ministry of Education conducted a special audit on the allegations of fraudulent admissions and referred the case to the prosecution for investigation into suspicions that university officials received bribes.
