[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The media art exhibition combining art and music, "Kandinsky Media Art & People Who Paint Music," will open on the 10th and continue until March 9.
This exhibition highlights the artistic theory of Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who continuously pursued the fusion of art and music.
Kandinsky, along with Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century, both as a painter and an art theorist. This exhibition, themed around the collaboration of art and music, begins by exploring Kandinsky's artistic world and showcases how his artistic and philosophical reflections from over 100 years ago are reinterpreted through 21st-century media art and music.
Gallery 1 at Sejong Museum of Art is set up as a "New Media Art Exhibition Hall" focusing on Kandinsky, while Gallery 2 presents works by contemporary artists who depict popular music under the theme "People Who Paint Music." Commentary by docent Kim Chan-yong is available through the "Qpicker" application.
The exhibition in Gallery 1, titled "Kandinsky and New Media," displays archives such as retrospective posters and prints of Kandinsky, along with original works reproduced through digital printing. This allows visitors to examine Kandinsky's artistic perspective from an art historical viewpoint. A video art section also presents a three-dimensional view of the deconstruction process of one of Kandinsky's representative works, "Composition VIII."
Additionally, visitors can experience Kim So-jang's experimental work "Stage 2020," which reinterprets sketches Kandinsky left when producing the stage for Russian composer Mussorgsky's piano pieces, and Osunmi's "Sealed Time_Past," where visitors can enter the artwork and experience Kandinsky's colors implemented with LED bulbs. Furthermore, a large media room screens the media art piece "Spirit of Kandinsky," which overlaps Kandinsky with dance and string instruments.
In Gallery 2 at Sejong Museum of Art, works by artists such as Quaya, Jung Sang-yoon, and Sparks Edition, who express music through painting, are exhibited. Illustrator Quaya presents 14 original album covers of the band Jannabi along with 17 new works themed on music, while Jung Sang-yoon exhibits works that reinterpret Kandinsky's portrait with bold colors and add his energy to the intense beats of contemporary music. For this exhibition, the two illustrators will perform live. The improvisational performance by violinist Eugene Park, who expresses art through music, can also be enjoyed as a media art piece.
Moreover, various educational programs are offered for preschool children through elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as English discussion programs based on Kandinsky's artistic theories.
The viewing hours for "Kandinsky Media Art & People Who Paint Music" are from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM, and tickets can be purchased on the Interpark website and mobile app.
