'Red Flag' Raised at Iranian Mosque... Is US Retaliation Imminent? Iranian military official Soleimani killed in U.S. airstrike [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] It was reported that a red flag was raised atop the Jamkaran Mosque (Islamic temple) in Iran on the 4th (local time).

The red flag of Jamkaran Mosque symbolizes an imminent fierce battle to the extent that the blood of martyrs will flow, and Iran's state broadcaster interpreted it as a warning sent by Islam and Iran to their enemies. Some local media also reported that this is the first time a red flag has been raised at Jamkaran Mosque.

The flag is said to bear the inscription meaning "Revenge for Imam Hussein." Imam Hussein is the most revered leader of the Shia Muslim community. He was brutally killed in battle against the Sunni dynasty in 680 AD, and Shia Muslims still mourn his death and vow revenge against their enemies.

A religious foundation official who came to raise the red flag carried a portrait of Iranian military figure Soleimani, who died in a US airstrike on the 3rd, and climbed to the mosque rooftop. This was intended to signify retaliation against the United States by raising the flag. Following Soleimani's death, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered "severe retaliation" on the 3rd.
