[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran in Iraq, a rocket attack around Baghdad Airport has resulted in over 10 casualties. The rocket attack, believed to have targeted the US military base near the airport, is expected to further worsen the situation in Iraq.
According to the Associated Press, on the night of the 3rd (local time), at least three rockets landed near the cargo terminal of Baghdad Airport, killing at least four people and injuring more than 10. According to Russia's TASS news agency, the attack was a terrorist act targeting the US military base in the area, injuring at least 12 Iraqi soldiers and several civilians. Some rockets directly hit the airport runway, causing the airport to close.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, but it is suspected to be the work of Shiite militias who had previously surrounded and attacked the US Embassy in Baghdad on the 31st of last month. According to TASS, the Shiite militias also fired four mortars at the Al-Taji base in northern Baghdad, where US troops are stationed, on the 30th of last month.
Meanwhile, after a rocket attack on a US military base on the 27th of last month killed one American, the US identified pro-Iranian Shiite militias in Iraq as the perpetrators and bombed their base with fighter jets two days later. This resulted in the deaths of 25 Shiite militants.
