Mapo-gu Launches 'Conflict Management Center'... Resolving Resident Conflicts

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) is establishing the Mapo-gu Conflict Management Center to professionally manage issues arising from social conflicts and will begin full-scale operations from the new year.

The district established the Mapo-gu Conflict Management Center within the Mapo-gu Audit Office on December 31.

The Mapo-gu Conflict Management Center is a pledge by Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu to reduce unnecessary social costs and enhance public trust by mediating and managing conflicts among stakeholders in the realm of public conflicts.

To this end, on the 24th, the district launched the 'Mapo-gu Conflict Management Committee' and awarded appointment letters to the 11 committee members.

The committee includes conflict management experts and lawyers such as Seo Jeongcheol, General Secretary of the Korean Association for Conflict Studies, and Joo Geonil, Director of the Seoul YMCA Neighborhood Dispute Mediation Center, as well as district council members. The term of office is two years.

According to the 'Seoul Special City Mapo-gu Ordinance on the Prevention and Mediation of Public Conflicts,' enacted and promulgated by the district in the second half of last year, the committee will perform roles such as ▲establishing comprehensive plans for the prevention and resolution of public conflicts ▲discovering and utilizing methods for resolving public conflicts ▲deliberation and consultation on the implementation of conflict impact analysis.

Additionally, the district plans to form a 'Resident Jury' consisting of 21 residents in the first half of this year to involve them in resolving conflicts arising during the public policy decision-making process.

Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu said, “Recently, many social conflicts have arisen due to the increasing complexity and diversification of interests,” adding, “We will manage public conflicts and reduce unnecessary social costs through a professional system for conflict management.”
