On March 2, the city of Gyeongju announced that it had signed a "Memorandum of Understanding for the Relocation of Silla Middle School to Yonghwang District" with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education.
The signing ceremony was held on February 27 at the Gyeongju Education Support Office, attended by Joonak Young, Mayor of Gyeongju, Jongsik Im, Superintendent of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, and officials from both organizations.
The participants agreed to cooperate closely to ensure the smooth relocation of Silla Middle School and to improve the educational conditions in the region.
Silla Middle School, currently located in Hwangseong-dong, has faced ongoing criticism over aging facilities, as more than 40 years have passed since its establishment.
There have also been concerns about the risk of traffic accidents for students, as the school is situated adjacent to major roads.
In particular, the Yonghwang District, which is densely populated with apartment complexes, has no middle school, forcing students to endure the inconvenience of long-distance commutes.
This issue has long been one of the most pressing demands of local residents.
The city has held multiple consultations with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education in response to these resident demands, and with the signing of this memorandum of understanding, has laid the foundation for accelerating the relocation to an available school site within the Yonghwang District.
Under the agreement, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education will oversee the overall relocation process for Silla Middle School and lead consultations with relevant agencies.
The city of Gyeongju plans to actively cooperate with the necessary administrative procedures and support efforts to secure the understanding and cooperation of local residents.
The city expects that this relocation will not only change the school's location, but also serve as a turning point to improve living conditions in the Yonghwang District and help the school evolve into one with a future-oriented educational environment.
Joonak Young, Mayor of Gyeongju, stated, "I am deeply pleased to announce the long-awaited relocation of a middle school to the Yonghwang District," adding, "We will focus the city's administrative capabilities to ensure that children can devote themselves to their studies in a safer and more comfortable environment, and to ensure that the project proceeds without setbacks."
