Master Moon Introduces Sound Innovation Technology
"Expecting to Deliver the Best Audio Experience in Daily Life"
Automatically Lowers Volume During Conversations
Samsung Electronics' next-generation Bluetooth earphones, the Galaxy Buds4 Pro, feature a function that can recognize the sound of sirens from fire trucks or ambulances even when Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) mode is in use. No matter how loud the music is, the moment a siren is detected, ANC is automatically turned off, and the device switches to ambient sound mode. When someone nearby starts a conversation and the user responds with "What did you say?", ANC is also disabled, and the music volume decreases.
Moon Hangil, Master at the Audio Group of the MX Business Division at Samsung Electronics, stated, "The Buds4 Pro elevate both sound quality and ANC performance," adding, "We hope that the product will seamlessly integrate into our customers' lives to deliver the best audio experience possible."
On February 26 (local time) in San Francisco, USA, Master Moon introduced the sound innovation technologies incorporated into the Galaxy Buds4 Pro and made these remarks.
20% Larger Diaphragm... "Adopting the Most Efficient Woofer Ever"
Inside the product, there are small speaker units that are divided according to their roles: a woofer for bass and a tweeter for treble. If a single speaker is used for all sounds, audio quality can become muddy, or certain frequency ranges may become weak. However, the Buds4 Pro physically separates the woofer and tweeter, allowing them to play music like orchestral instruments, which results in optimal sound reproduction.
Additionally, by minimizing the bezel at the edge of the speaker, the effective diaphragm area was expanded by 20% compared to its predecessor. This enables the delivery of both delicate and powerful sound, enhancing immersion. Master Moon said, "We have adopted the most efficient woofer ever by maximizing the diaphragm area while maintaining a compact size." He explained, "By applying such a 'super wide bezel-less woofer,' we have enhanced overall ANC performance and improved sound quality."
Refined ANC Functionality with Ergonomic Data
To provide optimal ANC functionality in the Buds4 Pro, Samsung Electronics has collaborated with the University of Michigan in the United States since 2024. The company selected the most suitable design based on ergonomic data drawn from over 100 million ear shape datasets worldwide and more than 10,000 wearing simulations. Master Moon stated, "We started our research with the ears of many ethnicities around the world to achieve a stable fit," adding, "As a result, the Buds4 Pro have been designed to provide the most natural and comfortable sound experience in any situation."
The Adaptive Equalizer function, which detects sound leakage depending on the user's wearing status or ear shape and corrects the audio quality, has expanded its correction range up to 2 kHz compared to the previous model.
Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been used to advance the device's ability to understand user intent and the surrounding environment. One such feature is Siren Detection. When a siren sound of 85dB or higher from sources like fire trucks or police cars is detected, ANC is instantly turned off and switches to ambient sound mode, regardless of how loud the music is.
A Voice Detection feature is also included. This function automatically lowers the music volume and turns off ANC, switching to ambient sound mode when the user attempts to engage in conversation. For instance, even if the user is listening to music with ANC enabled, when someone next to them speaks and the user responds with "What did you say?", ANC is automatically disabled and ambient sound mode is activated, allowing for smooth conversation.
There is also a hidden function that automatically adjusts the intensity of ANC based on surrounding noise. In quiet spaces like libraries, the ANC intensity is automatically reduced to minimize pressure, while exposure to noisy environments such as streets causes the ANC intensity to increase automatically.
Improving Call Quality Using Deep Learning AI Models
AI technology has also been applied to the area of call quality. Above all, the top priority was to achieve natural and clear digital voice quality even in extremely noisy environments.
Master Moon emphasized, "While maintaining the background noise reduction performance of the previous model, we have further refined the clarity of consonants, word endings, and speech boundaries, as well as enhanced the preservation of high-frequency voices."
He also added, "By utilizing deep learning AI models to recognize users' voice patterns, we have enabled stable call quality regardless of the environment or activity."
During the development process of the Buds4, data was directly collected from noisy environments such as cafes, roads, and train stations, and possible call scenarios were constructed. Based on this accumulated data, an acceleration signal algorithm was developed to effectively process noise and echo.
Master Moon stated, "The Buds4 Pro are designed to detect changes in wearing status in real time and immediately adjust the noise reduction algorithm, ensuring that both callers and receivers always enjoy the best possible call quality."
