Jang Myungrae, former Second Vice Mayor of Changwon Special City in South Gyeongsang Province, stated on the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Movement that he would reflect on the spirit of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists who dedicated themselves to freedom and democracy.
Jomyeongrae, preliminary candidate for mayor of Changwon Special City, bowed in silence after paying respects at the Changwon March 15th Democratic Uprising Memorial Tower.
On March 1, Jang paid tribute at the Changwon March 15th Uprising Memorial Tower, located in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon Special City, and observed a moment of silence.
Afterward, he attended the "107th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony of the March 1st Movement" at the Shrine of Patriotic Martyrs. The event proceeded in the following order: national ceremony, introduction of bereaved families and guests, memorial address and commemorative speech, recitation of a dedicatory poem, and three cheers for independence.
Jang remarked, "March 1, 1919, is marked by the blood and sweat of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists who fought for Korea's independence and freedom. The desire for freedom continued with the March 15th Masan Uprising in 1960 and blossomed into democracy through the April 19th Revolution."
He went on to say, "Reflecting on this spirit, I will strive to build a Changwon that moves beyond integration toward coexistence, a city where people can freely pursue their dreams. I, Jang Myungrae, will continue to uphold the value of freedom."
He also emphasized, "I will deeply engrave in my heart the sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists, never forgetting the sacrifices of the past, and I will be someone who acts for a warmer Changwon Special City."
