As industrial accidents resulting in the deaths of migrant workers continue in the Jeonnam region, civic groups supporting these workers have called for countermeasures.
The Jeonnam Migrant Workers' Human Rights Network issued a press release on March 1, stating, "Two migrant workers died in industrial accidents at the Yeongam Daebul National Industrial Complex in just four days," and criticized, "Daebul Industrial Complex has become not a workplace, but a 'massive grave'.
The group further emphasized, "These consecutive workplace accidents began with a 'ship block overturning' incident, which is a typical occurrence in underdeveloped countries," and stressed, "A thorough investigation is needed to determine whether basic safety regulations were followed."
They also added, "The Ministry of Employment and Labor should conduct a special inspection of all workplaces within Daebul Industrial Complex, and Jeonnam Province should establish a safety and health system," calling for "practical measures to ensure the safety of migrant workers."
On February 24 and 28, at Yeongam Daebul Industrial Complex, migrant workers from Vietnam and Cambodia died after either suffocating from argon gas or being crushed by a 1-ton ship block.
The network plans to operate a citizens' memorial altar for migrant workers in front of Jeonnam Provincial Government until March 3, and will hold a candlelight memorial event to mourn the deceased migrant workers.
