Yoonchul Koo, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy and Finance, has pledged strong measures to prevent a recurrence of the recent case in which the National Tax Service leaked information on seized virtual assets.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Finance official chairing the joint emergency situation assessment meeting of related agencies regarding the Middle East situation.
On March 1, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Deputy Prime Minister Koo stated, "Together with relevant agencies such as the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service, the government and public institutions will review the current status and actual conditions of digital assets seized and managed from delinquent taxpayers." He added, "We will promptly implement measures to strengthen security management and prevent a recurrence," and clarified, "The government does not hold any digital assets other than those seized in the process of law enforcement."
Previously, on February 26, the National Tax Service announced its achievements in seizing assets from delinquent taxpayers and distributed photos of a hardware wallet (virtual asset wallet). However, the recovery password for the wallet, known as the 'mnemonic phrase,' was not concealed in the images, resulting in an incident where coins worth approximately 6 billion won were leaked to an unidentified account.
