Police Intensify Night-Long Crackdown
116 Traffic Violations Result in Fines
On the occasion of the March 1st Independence Movement Day, a large-scale late-night special crackdown by the Gwangju Police led to the disappearance of motorcycle gangs that had previously dominated the city center.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on March 1 that, during the 'March 1st Special Crackdown on Reckless Motorcycle Riding' which continued until dawn, they detected a total of 116 traffic violations including drunk driving and driving without a license, rather than catching motorcycle gangs.
According to police officials, the preemptive and visible announcement of the crackdown prevented the large-scale gathering of motorcycle gangs that had been initially feared. However, during this late-night operation, six cases of drunk driving (three resulting in license revocation and three in license suspension) and two cases of driving without a license were detected.
Additionally, the police apprehended one individual on the scene who had been wanted for failing to pay fines in connection with violent incidents. Apart from this, 107 cases of traffic violations, including running red lights, resulted in the issuance of traffic fines.
From the evening of the previous day until dawn on March 1, the police concentrated their forces at major intersections and locations where motorcycle gangs were expected to gather in downtown Gwangju, conducting an all-night operation.
An official from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We will continue to respond flexibly and strongly to reckless motorcycle driving and gang activities that threaten the safety of citizens," adding, "We plan to enforce the law at all times to foster a safe traffic culture."
