"Support Program for Entry into Sam's Club China" Begins in March
Sell Without Inventory Risk Thanks to 100% Direct Import Strategy
Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) is leveraging the recently improved atmosphere of Korea-China cooperation to help Korean consumer goods make inroads into the Chinese market.
KOTRA announced on March 2 that it will launch the "Support Program for Entry into Sam's Club China" as a year-round initiative starting this month. Sam's Club is a membership-based warehouse discount chain operated by Walmart, a global distributor, and currently runs 63 stores in China, attracting a large customer base from the middle class and above. With nearly 9 million paid members, it is the largest membership-based retail network in China.
KOTRA will accept applications from Korean consumer goods companies, introduce them to Sam's Club, and support the entire process for companies selected for follow-up consultations by Sam's Club-ranging from sample delivery and entry consultations to factory inspections. In particular, KOTRA plans to enhance the success rate of store entry by providing advance guidance and financial support so that companies can pass the rigorous factory inspections (including production processes, quality management, and social responsibility) required by global standards.
Sam's Club differentiates itself by adopting a 100% direct import strategy. Unlike typical distribution networks, once a product is selected for entry, the distributor purchases the products directly, alleviating inventory risk for exporters. In addition, once a product is approved, it can be sold simultaneously at all 63 stores across China, which is a significant advantage.
KOTRA has been supporting entry into Sam's Club through its Asia purchasing headquarters and trade office in Shenzhen, China. Over the past five years, this effort has generated export results worth a total of 10 million dollars. Thanks to this long-standing cooperation, a systematic process is now in place where Sam's Club buyers regularly communicate their purchasing needs to the trade office, and KOTRA headquarters as well as related institutions work together to identify suitable companies.
This year, Sam's Club is particularly interested in importing food (including refrigerated, frozen, and shelf-stable desserts), baby products (such as strollers, baby food, and breast pumps), and household goods (including toothpaste, toothbrushes, body care, sports, camping, and vehicle products). The company has also expressed a strong desire to discover and source high-quality Korean consumer goods.
Hwang Jaewon, Head of KOTRA's China Regional Headquarters, said, "As a global company, Sam's Club wields significant influence in China's consumer market, and entering its distribution channels could serve as a catalyst for Korean products to expand into China. We will leverage our accumulated know-how from years of collaboration with Sam's Club to provide close support so that Korean consumer goods can fully capitalize on the current momentum of Korea-China cooperation."
