Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province will launch a program this month to rent out automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at events where large crowds gather, in order to prepare for emergencies such as cardiac arrest.
The rental program targets mass gatherings organized by private organizations, such as sports events. Applications must be submitted at least seven days prior to the event, after which an internal review will determine eligibility for rental. In principle, the AED must be picked up the day before or on the day of the event, and returned immediately after the event concludes.
Priority will be given to events expected to attract large numbers of people or those with a high likelihood of participation by senior citizens or vulnerable groups. The county will comprehensively review whether event venues have designated safety personnel to respond to emergencies, as well as whether there are individuals who have completed AED usage training.
The head of the Yeonggwang County Public Health Center stated, "For cardiac arrest patients, survival rates depend on a rapid response within four minutes," adding, "By ensuring AEDs are used promptly at local events, we aim to protect residents' lives and establish an effective initial emergency response system."
