"Demonstrates Commitment to Innovation and Open Market Environment"
Boosting Industries such as AI Services and Mobility
The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) stated that the government's conditional approval for Google to export high-precision maps is "a constructive step that we welcome, as it further strengthens Korea's competitiveness as a global digital powerhouse."
James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM, said in a statement released on February 27, "The progress on this long-debated digital trade issue demonstrates the Korean government's commitment to fostering innovation, an open market environment, and a fair competitive landscape for global companies operating in Korea."
Kim also explained, "AMCHAM has consistently raised the need for improvements in digital regulations over the past several years to enhance Korea's appeal as a hub in the Asia-Pacific region, and has served as a bridge between the government and industry throughout this process. I believe this decision marks an important milestone in the ongoing discussions."

He continued, "This measure may also contribute to strengthening digital cooperation between Korea and the United States, which are expanding their collaboration in emerging technology sectors. Enhancing interoperability with global platforms is expected to accelerate the growth of various next-generation industries, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based services, mobility, and tourism, and lead to new opportunities including the creation of startups and quality jobs."
He further added, "It is crucial that the implementation of these policies appropriately considers the balance between innovation and national security."
Chairman Kim concluded, "AMCHAM will continue to work closely with the government and industry as a trusted bridge, striving to help Korea establish itself as a leading digital economy and a regional headquarters hub for global businesses."
