Establishing a Carbon Emission Calculation System for Export Logistics and Transportation
Building a Standardized and Shared Carbon Data Infrastructure
The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) has begun efforts to establish a carbon emission calculation system for the export logistics and transportation sector.
On February 27, at Trade Tower in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, KITA signed a "Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Establishing a Carbon Emission Calculation System in the Export Logistics and Transportation Sector" with the Korean Standards Association (KSA), Korea Trade Network (KTNET), Korea Electric Power Data Network (KEPCO KDN), Korea Shipping Association, and Korea Integrated Logistics Association.
On the 27th, at the Trade Tower in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, key figures from the signatory organizations posed for a commemorative photo at the signing ceremony of the "Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Establishing a Carbon Emission Calculation System in Export Logistics and Transportation." This agreement aims to provide a foundation to support Korean companies in calculating carbon emissions in the logistics and transportation sectors, and to strengthen the trade industry's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and greenhouse gas regulation response capabilities. This is in response to the tightening of global carbon regulations, such as the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Digital Product Passport (DPP).
Attendees at the signing ceremony included Jinshik Yoon, Chairman of KITA; Dongmin Moon, Chairman of the Korean Standards Association; Jin Ko, President of Korea Trade Network; Changho Yang, Executive Vice President of the Korea Shipping Association; Mooyoung Cho, Vice Chairman of the Korea Integrated Logistics Association; and Jinsu Choi, Head of KEPCO KDN Headquarters.
Through this agreement, the organizations plan to jointly build a big data-based carbon emission calculation infrastructure for the export logistics and transportation sector, and cooperate so that exporters can easily measure and utilize carbon information.
Specifically, KITA will be responsible for the distribution of carbon regulation response services, identifying market demand, and activating inter-agency service linkages. The Korean Standards Association will handle the standardization, demonstration of industrial data, Digital Product Passport (DPP), and data space, as well as carbon emission verification. Korea Trade Network will promote carbon data integration, establish a data space-based logistics carbon data sharing system, and link with trade logistics platforms. KEPCO KDN will support integrated energy and logistics data platforms and services. The Korea Shipping Association and the Korea Integrated Logistics Association will each support the establishment of data sharing systems for maritime and inland transportation, the application of international standards, and the expansion within the industry.
The organizations also plan to continuously identify and promote joint cooperation projects to respond to global carbon regulations, and will actively support Korean companies' overseas market entry and export competitiveness to keep pace with the rapidly changing global regulatory environment.
Jinshik Yoon, Chairman of KITA, stated, "As global carbon regulations are rapidly becoming more concrete, the ability to manage carbon data in logistics and transportation is a key factor for the sustainability of our exports. The six organizations will work closely together to establish a practical support system that exporters can truly benefit from, and will align with the government's carbon response policies."
