Chris Turner: "An Opportunity to Showcase the Capabilities of Google Maps"
On February 27, Google welcomed the South Korean government's conditional approval for the overseas transfer of Google's high-precision maps, as requested by the company.
Chris Turner, Vice President of Government Affairs, Policy, Knowledge & Information at Google, stated in a press release distributed through Google Korea on the same day, "We sincerely welcome the South Korean government's decision to permit the export of maps," adding, "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of Google Maps in Korea."
Vice President Turner emphasized, "This decision marks an important step forward, and Google looks forward to supporting Korea's growth by preparing concrete service implementation plans and working closely with the government and local partners."
He went on to say, "Going forward, Google will continue to be a dedicated and responsible partner in Korea's digital ecosystem," and added, "We will do our utmost to ensure Korea's innovative capabilities shine through Google Maps and that the nation's potential is widely recognized around the world."
On the same day, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a meeting of the 'Survey Data Overseas Transfer Council' at the National Geographic Information Institute in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, to discuss whether to allow the overseas transfer of 1:5,000 scale high-precision maps. The ministry decided to grant permission on the condition that requirements such as security processing, restrictions on coordinate display, and the use of domestic servers are strictly observed.
