On February 27, Pohang City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Joint Cooperation to Foster the Advanced Regenerative Medicine Industry with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Andong City, Uiseong County, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) of Germany at the Gyeongbuk Eastern Provincial Office.
The main focus of this agreement includes cooperation in the development of hybrid microsystem technology, the promotion of international joint research projects in the field of regenerative medicine, and the cultivation of global professionals.

Hybrid microsystem technology refers to a system that integrates biological tissues and micro-sensors. Moving forward, it is expected to generate a research and development synergy effect by being linked with national research infrastructure in the Pohang region.
After the signing ceremony, representatives from the Fraunhofer Institute visited Pohang's advanced bio-research facilities.
They toured the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory and the Membrane Protein Research Center, and discussed future joint research and technology cooperation plans with researchers from POSTECH, Handong Global University, and other institutions.
Jang Sangkil, Acting Mayor of Pohang, stated, "This agreement will serve as a foundation for the global expansion of the bio and biomedical engineering industry in Pohang," adding, "Based on our region's excellent research infrastructure, we will strengthen the competitiveness of the advanced regenerative medicine industry and advance as a hub of the bio and biomedical engineering sector."
Meanwhile, the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) is a German research institute established in 1987. It has developed competitiveness in the fields of biomedical engineering and theranostics (integrated diagnosis and treatment) technology, and employs over 160 researchers.
