A Modern Take on the Value of Communal Childcare
On February 27, Sangju City in North Gyeongsang Province announced that it has established the third '0-Year-Old Specialized' Shared Childcare Center for infants under one year old on the second floor of the Sangju Integrated Childcare Center (3, Namsan 2-gil). The center is currently in a pilot operation phase, with an official opening scheduled for March.
The third '0-Year-Old Specialized' Shared Childcare Center is part of the Gyeongsangbuk-do ‘K-Bodeum 6000 Facility’ initiative. It is a space that modernizes the communal childcare values of the past, where entire villages would raise children together. The purpose is to provide a warm childcare haven where parents and babies can learn and find comfort together through neighborly interaction.
In particular, a dedicated nurse and childcare teacher are stationed at the center to systematically support program management, health education, health care, and parental counseling. The center plans to offer user-centered, customized services tailored to the developmental characteristics of infants, ensuring that parents do not have to bear the burden of childcare alone during the most delicate and important period up to the child’s first birthday.
The center is open to infants aged 60 days to less than 12 months and their parents, with one parent required to accompany each infant. Operating hours are divided into two sessions: morning (9:00 AM-1:00 PM) and afternoon (2:00 PM-6:00 PM). Families can use the center once a week, up to four times a month.
Additionally, the center will offer a variety of customized programs, including infant sensory development programs and baby massage sessions focused on the baby, as well as parent education and cultural or experiential programs for parents.
The facility is available to families from anywhere in the country. Applications can be made in advance for the following month starting at 10:00 AM on the 25th of each month via the 'Sangju City 0-Year-Old Specialized Class' menu on the Gyeongbuk Childcare Integrated Support Center website. For further details, inquiries can be directed to the Sangju City Shared Childcare Center 0-Year-Old Specialized Class.
Kang Youngseok, Mayor of Sangju City, stated, "A child's first year is a very important period that forms the foundation for lifelong growth," adding, "Sangju City will support professional and systematic infant care tailored to each child so that parents do not have to shoulder the burden and concerns alone, making our city a great place to raise children."
