35% Progress Reached, On Track for Second Half Opening
Anticipation Builds for a World-Class Interactive Landmark
A world-class interactive landmark representing Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province will be unveiled to citizens and tourists this July.
Gwangyang City announced that the 'Gwangyang Gubongsan Mountain Landmark (Interactive Sculpture) Project,' which is underway at the summit of Gubongsan Mountain, has reached 35% completion and is progressing smoothly.

The city plans to complete installation of the main structure of the sculpture by May, finish associated landscaping and auxiliary works by the end of July, and proceed with the aim of opening in the second half of the year.
The interactive sculpture, with a total project cost of 18 billion won, will feature a width of 13 to 21 meters, a height of 23.5 meters, and a ramp stretching 300 meters in length.
Particularly notable is its futuristic and sophisticated design, characterized by a spiral of silvery metal rising smoothly and overlapping in layers.
Visitors will be able to ascend to the summit along the 300-meter-long spiral ramp, experiencing the sensation of walking above the clouds. As they walk the ramp, they will be treated to a 360-degree panoramic view beneath their feet, showcasing the blue sea of Gwangyang Bay, the Yi Sun-sin Bridge, and the dynamic nightscape of the industrial complex-offering an overwhelming visual experience.
This project is a large-scale regional coexistence initiative jointly pursued by Gwangyang City, which aspires to become a global city of the future, and POSCO, which values coexistence.
It began in August 2022 with POSCO's proposal for the 'Gwangyang Landmark Project.' Subsequently, Gwangyang City, the city council, and POSCO signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). Through expert advisory committee operations and citizen surveys, the final design was selected in June 2024, reflecting a thorough verification process and the incorporation of citizen feedback.
Additionally, considering both convenience and accessibility, Gwangyang City held discussions in the second half of 2024 to improve access roads and ensured a barrier-free route by installing an inclined elevator along the optimal path.
A Gwangyang City official stated, "The Gubongsan Mountain interactive sculpture is a monumental work of art that embodies the identity of Gwangyang, the city of light and steel. Upon completion in July and trial operation in August, it will become a new source of pride for Gwangyang citizens and establish itself as a key attraction in the southern coastal tourism belt, drawing one million visitors annually."
Once completed, the Gubongsan Mountain interactive sculpture is expected to become a new symbol of the city and serve as a central hub within the southern coastal tourism belt.
