Gwangju Seo District in Gwangju Metropolitan City is strengthening a practical wildfire response system, including on-site response drills and the expansion of equipment, to ensure rapid initial suppression and the protection of lives in the event of a wildfire. On the morning of the 26th, the district conducted a simulated wildfire suppression drill in the Haksan-sa area of Seochang-dong.
About 50 officials from related organizations, including the Gwangju Seo District Office, the Forest Disaster Response Unit, and the Seobu Fire Station, took part in the drill. Wildfire suppression vehicles, fire engines, and backpack pumps were mobilized, and the entire process from initial wildfire response through to complete extinguishment was carried out as if in a real situation.
The drill was conducted in a way that systematically checked each step of the response procedure, from receiving a wildfire damage report and carrying out rapid initial suppression, to establishing and operating an integrated on-site wildfire command center, holding situation assessment meetings for resident evacuation, and giving press briefings.
Going forward, Gwangju Seo District plans to continue strengthening its disaster response capabilities through regular simulations and on-site inspections, and to maintain an administrative stance that prioritizes the protection of residents' lives and safety in all types of disaster situations.
Seo District Mayor Kim Ikang said, "Because wildfires are disasters in which initial suppression is more important than anything else, we have further enhanced our on-site response capabilities through practical, manual-based training," and added, "We ask for residents' special attention and active cooperation so that wildfires caused by carelessness, such as accidental fires started by hikers or illegal burning in areas adjacent to forests, do not occur."
