Gwangju Police to Intensively Crack Down on Reckless and Speeding Two-Wheeled Vehicles on March 1 Independence Movement Day

From the night of February 28 to the early morning of March 1

Gwangju police will launch a large-scale crackdown on motorcycle biker gangs that take over downtown streets and on reckless driving ahead of March 1 Independence Movement Day.

The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gwangju City Autonomous Police Committee announced on February 26 that they will conduct an intensive crackdown on illegal acts by two-wheeled vehicles across Gwangju from the night of February 28 until the early morning of March 1.

This crackdown has been prepared to preemptively stop group speeding and racing through downtown areas during the March 1 Independence Movement Day period. The police will mobilize a total of 154 officers from traffic patrol units, the traffic police squad, and the traffic crime investigation team, along with 56 patrol cars and police motorcycles, to carry out preemptive prevention activities on site.

The police will conduct visible, fixed-point crackdowns focused on major intersections and locations where speeding and reckless two-wheeled vehicles are expected to gather. In particular, they will simultaneously carry out drunk driving checks to fundamentally block illegal activities that cause noise in the city center and create anxiety among citizens, and will focus on ensuring a pleasant and safe traffic environment.

In addition, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency plans not to stop at this special late-night crackdown for March 1 Independence Movement Day, but to continue joint crackdowns on a regular basis with related organizations such as the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and local governments, in order to eradicate illegal acts by two-wheeled vehicles that inconvenience citizens.

An official from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said, "We will respond strictly and with zero tolerance to reckless and speeding behavior by two-wheeled vehicles that threatens citizens' precious daily lives and safety," adding, "We will do our best to eradicate illegal acts by two-wheeled vehicles and to ensure traffic safety."
