A Modern Reinterpretation of 300,000 Years of Human History
Solidifying Its Status as Korea's Leading Historical and Cultural Festival
The Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival, the representative festival of Yeoncheon-gun, received the Grand Prize in the Cultural Heritage and History category at the 14th Korea Festival Contents Awards 2026, held at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, on February 24.
The Korea Festival Contents Awards is the most prestigious festival-specialized awards ceremony in Korea, hosted by the Korea Festival Contents Association. It discovers and honors outstanding festivals that have contributed to the development of the regional festival contents industry. Marking its 14th anniversary this year, the ceremony was held successfully with festival officials from across the country in attendance.
The Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival is a leading Korean historical and cultural festival that uses the globally significant prehistoric site of the Jeongok-ri Paleolithic Site as its content, turning 300,000 years of human history into hands-on experience-based content. Through differentiated programs such as the Paleolithic Barbecue, World Paleolithic Experience Yard, Jeongokrian Parade, and Paleolithic Olympics, it is recognized for conveying prehistoric culture in an easy and engaging way, while securing both educational value and popular appeal.
An official from Yeoncheon-gun said, "We are transforming the geographical limitations of being a border area into a cultural brand asset, and we are pursuing a sustainable tourism festival by operating the festival in connection with local commercial districts," adding, "By being selected for eight consecutive years as a Culture and Tourism Festival designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and by winning the Festival Contents Grand Prize, it has truly become one of Korea's representative festivals." Furthermore, a global vision was presented in connection with the promotion of the "2029 Yeoncheon World Paleolithic Expo."
Meanwhile, the 33rd Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival will be held for four days from May 2 to May 5 at and around the Jeongok-ri Site. This year's festival is expected to serve as a springboard toward the successful hosting of the 2029 Yeoncheon World Paleolithic Expo.
