This selection marks the second achievement following the “2024 Green New Deal Power Line Undergrounding Project” and is expected to serve as an important opportunity to expand the long-awaited power line undergrounding project of local residents across the entire city.

The “Local Government-Requested Power Line Undergrounding Project” is a state-supported program that removes utility poles and buries power and communication lines underground in areas where undergrounding is urgently needed, such as school commuting routes, traditional markets, urban regeneration zones, and aging industrial complexes.

Through this project, the city will improve an approximately 400-meter section from the intersection in front of the Xi Apartment Complex in Samsung-dong to the entrance of Hanssem Presbyterian Church. By undergrounding the utility poles and aging overhead power lines in this section, the city plans to prevent electrical safety accidents while securing pedestrian space and thereby enhancing residents’ perceived safety.

The city has made multifaceted efforts to be selected for the project. It visited the headquarters of Korea Electric Power Corporation in Naju, South Jeolla Province, to explain the necessity and urgency of the project, and devoted all-out efforts to responding to the competition by participating in related briefing sessions.

Within this year, the city plans to sign a business agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies such as SKT, complete the detailed design, and then begin construction in March 2027, with the goal of completing the project in August of the same year.

An official from Yangju City said, “It is very meaningful that this long-awaited project for residents, which involves a complex implementation process, has once again been selected for the competition following 2024,” adding, “This project will greatly help improve residential conditions for citizens by ensuring safer school commuting routes and enhancing the urban landscape.”

The city plans to continue expanding the power line undergrounding project, focusing on aging downtown areas and areas around schools.
