A Multi-Purpose Forest Recreation Space
Shaped Like a Spaceship, Opening in Earnest in June
Uiryeong County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on the 12th that it has completed the creation of “Hanusan Byeolcheonji,” a multi-purpose forest recreation space that utilizes Hanusan’s outstanding natural environment and night-sky resources, and has held a completion ceremony.
Although Hanusan is a highland with an elevation of over 800 meters, vehicles can reach areas near the summit, offering both accessibility and panoramic views. Thanks to its open terrain in all directions and a natural environment with almost no light pollution, it provides optimal conditions for observing the Milky Way.
Hanusan has been known among photographers and astronomy enthusiasts across the country as a “hidden star observation spot.” The young people who used to shoulder their backpacks and climb the mountain in search of stars became the starting point for this project.
To systematize these regional characteristics as tourism and educational resources, Uiryeong County invested a total project cost of 5.4 billion won, of which it secured 2 billion won in national funding. The project was built on a 4,980-square-meter site of the existing Hanusan ecological parking lot (San 200, Byeokgye-ri, Gungnyu-myeon, Uiryeong County). Construction began in April 2023, the building work was completed in December 2025, and the facility has now been officially finished.
Hanusan Byeolcheonji features an original architectural design inspired by a spaceship in the night sky, combining sculptural symbolism with functionality. It has been developed as a complex forest recreation and experiential infrastructure that includes constellation observation facilities and an observatory, as well as an astronomy education space and accommodation functions, and it is expected to serve as a hub for experiential tourism.
Accessibility is also being further enhanced. The Hanusan Tunnel, which leads toward Soemokjae, the entrance to Byeolcheonji, is preparing to open, improving convenience of access. Along the road up the mountain, there is an ecological forest promotional center, and around “Hanujeong,” a rest area on the way to the summit of Hanusan, the Dokkaebi Folklore Garden and Honguisong Garden have been created to offer a variety of experiences and attractions.
In addition, in the Hanujeong area, the “Kkotbaram Rest Area,” equipped with a rest space and restrooms, has been established, and an observatory has been built at the summit, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular views that spread out in all directions. In spring, azaleas bloom in profusion, turning the entire mountain red and showcasing its superb natural environment, while specialized tree species such as maple trees and gorosoe maple trees have been planted, providing distinct scenery in all four seasons.
Hanusan Byeolcheonji is scheduled to begin full-scale operation this coming June after facility inspections and operational preparations are completed.
County Governor Oh Taewan said, “I hope that Hanusan’s excellent natural environment and night-sky resources will provide meaningful experiences for many people,” adding, “We will continue to expand tourism and experiential infrastructure that reflects the region’s unique characteristics.”
