Junior Lawmakers Lead Calls for Explanation
During the People Power Party's general assembly, junior lawmakers raised issues regarding the expulsion of former leader Han Donghoon. Primarily members of the "Alternative and Future" group, they demanded that the party leadership explain the background behind Han's expulsion.
On February 2, the People Power Party held a general assembly at the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts meeting room in the National Assembly. Prior to the assembly, pro-Han and junior lawmakers had called for the meeting, demanding an explanation from the party leadership following the Supreme Council’s decision to expel Han.
Kwon Youngjin, a member of the Alternative and Future group, told reporters, "I asked Representative Jang Donghyuk to explain to lawmakers why Han was expelled if that was the decision," adding, "Although they say it was done to unite the party, I pointed out that, in reality, the division seems to be deepening, and that the party leader and leadership need to find a solution to this."
Assemblyman Kim Yongtae also said, "About a year ago, when Jang Donghyuk was a Supreme Council member, he downplayed the party member bulletin board issue, but after becoming party leader, I asked him to explain the background for deciding on expulsion," and added, "I also suggested that, to secure victory in the local elections, the party should hold a meeting with mayors, county, and district heads in the Seoul metropolitan area."
It was reported that the day's questions were mainly led by members of the Alternative and Future group. Representative Jang listened attentively to the lawmakers' remarks, and lawmakers aligned with Han Donghoon reportedly did not make significant comments during the early part of the assembly. No separate opinions have yet been expressed regarding the calls for Representative Jang’s resignation raised by pro-Han lawmakers, or the confidence vote on Jang proposed by Lim Ija, chair of the National Assembly’s Planning and Finance Committee.
Assemblyman Ahn Cheolsoo also told reporters, "I am conveying the mood within the party, the voices of the people I hear in my constituency, and their concerns," adding, "I am emphasizing the need for unity by any means. Since the discussion is still ongoing, no conclusion has been reached yet."
