Hamyang County Discusses AI Data Center Investment ... Accelerating High-Tech Industry Attraction

County Visits Mondrian AI Headquarters
Accelerating Investment in AI Data Center

Hamyang County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on February 2 that it visited the headquarters of Mondrian AI in Incheon Metropolitan City to meet with Choi Junglim, CEO of Orid Korea Co., Ltd., and Hong Daeui, CEO of Mondrian AI, as well as other investment company representatives, to discuss the progress of investment in the "Hamyang AI Data Center."

Orid Korea Co., Ltd. is a company currently constructing a 100MW data center in the Hucheon General Industrial Complex. Starting with investment plan consultations with Hamyang County in 2023, the company laid the foundation for attracting high-tech industries by changing the existing business category from cast iron foundry to "information service industry" through a revision of the management plan for the Hucheon General Industrial Complex in June 2024. The company has completed the power system impact assessment, and the design service has been progressing smoothly for four months.

The joint partner and operator, Mondrian AI, is a specialized company supporting big data-based artificial intelligence infrastructure construction, AI model development, industrial solution development, and IT/data consulting. The company is expected to be responsible for the efficient operation of the data center and the provision of advanced IT support in the future.

The planned site for the data center, the Hucheon General Industrial Complex, is located in a basin-shaped area with limited external exposure, providing excellent security. Additionally, a 154kV transmission line was already secured at the time of development to supply large-scale power to a steel mill, making it an optimal site for data center construction.

To maximize these locational advantages, Hamyang County is providing full administrative support. In February 2025, the county signed a power supply agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation, proactively securing a stable large-scale power base.

Orid Korea Co., Ltd., the project developer, plans to complete the necessary permits and approvals in the first half of 2026 and begin construction within the year. The company aims to complete construction in 2027 and commence full-scale operations from 2028. Hamyang County will continue to provide investment support in line with this schedule.

The total investment in the construction of the data center is expected to exceed 1.03 trillion won, creating more than 300 high-quality jobs, attracting related industries, increasing local tax revenue, and demonstrating that Hamyang County, which has traditionally focused on simple manufacturing, is also capable of supporting advanced IT industries. The project is expected to have a significant ripple effect, highlighting the region's growth potential.

An official from Hamyang County stated, "The construction of this AI data center will serve as a symbolic milestone that signals the potential for industrial transformation in Hamyang County, going beyond simply attracting a company." The official added, "We will focus all administrative capabilities on creating an environment where companies can invest with confidence, so that Hamyang can develop into a central city of the southern inland region."
