Selective Investment in High-Potential Projects
New Technologies Such as AI and Visual Effects Also Targeted
The Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association announced on January 29 that it has established an "IPTV Strategic Fund" worth a total of 40 billion won together with major IPTV operators such as KT, SK Broadband, and LG Uplus.
This fund is part of a collaborative framework with the "K-Content·Media Strategic Fund" being promoted by the Broadcasting and Media Communications Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The association will host the fund's secretariat, and the three companies have jointly contributed capital. Solaire Partners, a firm with expertise in video content investment, has been selected as the general partner (GP) for fund management.
Investments will begin in earnest next month. The main investment targets are video content production projects, with a particular focus on the domestic film sector, which is currently experiencing a downturn. By combining IPTV's viewer history data with Solaire Partners' investment expertise, the fund will identify projects with high potential for box office success and invest from the early stages of production.
Through this, the association aims to strengthen collaboration between production companies and platforms, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of IPTV content. The fund will also allocate capital to new media technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and visual effects (VFX), supporting the development of future production environments and ensuring the fund's sustainability.
The association expects that this fund, established entirely with private capital, will contribute not only to the government's content development policies but also to the formation of a virtuous distribution cycle for video content.
Lee Byungseok, President of the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association, stated, "The strategic fund investment by the three IPTV companies is the result of collaboration to jointly respond to the crisis in the domestic media industry," adding, "We will make every effort in management to deliver tangible results and build a sustainable industrial ecosystem."
