On January 12, the Ethics Tribunal of the Democratic Party of Korea decided to expel Assemblyman Kim Byungki, who has been accused of various misconducts, including allegations of nomination fundraising.
Han Dongsu, Chairperson of the Ethics Tribunal, met with reporters in front of the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day and stated, "Taking into account the expiration of the disciplinary statute of limitations and the seriousness of the matter, we have decided to expel him after comprehensive deliberation of the agenda."
Chairperson Han explained that the reasons for the disciplinary action against Assemblyman Kim include some allegations related to nomination fundraising, suspicions of receiving hotel accommodation vouchers from Korean Air, and possible violations of the Kim Youngran Act related to a luncheon with Coupang.
Regarding the nomination fundraising allegations in particular, Chairperson Han said, "Some parts are past the statute of limitations, and some are not. Specifically, the disciplinary decision documents will be delivered to the individuals under investigation, and they will have the right to request a retrial within seven days. The specific reasons will also be included in the decision documents."
The Democratic Party plans to receive a report on the Ethics Tribunal’s decision at the Supreme Council meeting on January 14, and then hold a general assembly of lawmakers on January 15 to go through the process of ratifying the decision.
