Council of Superintendents of Education to Change Name from National Council of Provincial and Metropolitan Education Superintendents to Korean Council of Superintendents of Education Starting Next Year

The National Council of Provincial and Metropolitan Education Superintendents (President: Eunhee Kang, Superintendent of Daegu) announced its "New Year's Message to the Educational Community and the People" on December 31, 2025, to mark the arrival of the new year 2026.

In her New Year's message, President Eunhee Kang stated, "In 2026, we aim to strengthen the foundation of education and pursue bolder innovations for the future," and outlined three key initiatives.

President Kang said, "First, we will strive to realize genuine local educational autonomy. To move toward education that inspires trust and reassurance, rather than concern among the people, we will listen closely to even the smallest voices in the field and work together to develop practical solutions."

She continued, "Second, we will improve educational conditions to create a warm and safe learning environment where students can freely ask questions and explore, and where teachers can focus on teaching and student guidance. Third, to open the door to future education based on trust and harmony, we will actively promote the transition to digital education in line with the era of artificial intelligence, while ensuring that humanity and the values of community remain at the core."

Meanwhile, starting in the new year 2026, the council's name will change from the "National Council of Provincial and Metropolitan Education Superintendents" to the "Korean Council of Superintendents of Education." This decision was made at the 105th General Assembly (November 20, Tongyeong, Gyeongnam) to ensure consistency in naming with other local governments and to further elevate the council's status. The council explained that the name change also reflects its determination to expand the role and scope of local educational autonomy and to create a better educational environment.
