Comprehensive Security Assessment Covering Terminal Operators and Port Operating Equipment at Busan Port
Information System Checks, Guideline Assessments, and Recovery Protocol Inspections Implemented
Busan Port has launched a full-scale battle against invisible intruders.
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sanggeun) conducted a comprehensive cyber security inspection of Busan Port facilities over a two-month period starting in November.

This inspection is a proactive measure to further strengthen the security system of Busan Port, a key national logistics hub, amid growing concerns over cyberattacks targeting ports both domestically and internationally.
The security assessment covered not only the information and communication networks of Busan Port Authority but also included terminal operators, major facilities, and partner companies at Busan Port. The inspection items included: ▲ checking for vulnerabilities in information systems ▲ assessing compliance with port cyber security guidelines ▲ reviewing security guidelines for information technology projects, among others.
Notably, for the first time, the security inspection included port operating equipment such as cranes used for cargo handling. This is significant as it expands the scope of security from traditional IT systems to physical operational equipment. In addition, in light of the recent fire incident at the National Information Resources Service, the inspection also strengthened the verification of system backup and recovery protocols.
Busan Port handles about 77% of Korea's container cargo, making it a core logistics infrastructure. There have been ongoing concerns that a cyberattack causing operational shutdown could result in massive economic losses. In fact, major global ports have also been identified as targets of cyber threats during their digital transformation, highlighting the need for greater vigilance.
Song Sanggeun, President of Busan Port Authority, stated, "Cyber security is an essential element that must be addressed as Busan Port advances toward becoming a smart port," adding, "We will promptly address any shortcomings identified in this inspection to ensure uninterrupted port services."
