Extorted Large Sums Through Betting Golf by Spiking Coffee with Drugs

A group of men in their 70s has been brought to trial after luring an acquaintance into a game of betting golf, spiking his drink with narcotics, and stealing a large sum of money. The group was apprehended at the scene while attempting to target another victim using the same method, even at the moment of their arrest.

Three Men in Their 70s Arrested for Spiking Coffee with Drugs During Betting Golf

According to the legal community on December 28, police detained and referred three men in their 70s to prosecutors in October on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act and fraud. The suspects are accused of making another man in his 70s, identified as Mr. A, drink coffee laced with psychotropic drugs at a golf course in Gyeonggi Province in August, then stealing 35 million won from him through a betting golf game.

Investigations revealed that a few days before the crime, the group had approached Mr. A, who appeared to be of a similar age, at a golf practice range in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, and suggested playing a round of betting golf together. On the day of the incident, Mr. A testified that after drinking the coffee, he became mentally disoriented but finished the round, only realizing after regaining his senses that he had already lost 35 million won.

Drug Detected in Victim’s Body After Experiencing Symptoms

Feeling suspicious due to sudden physical abnormalities, Mr. A immediately reported the incident to the police, and tests revealed the presence of narcotics in his system. Police subsequently arrested the three men at the golf course on the day of the crime. At the time of their arrest, they were found attempting a similar betting golf scam on another individual. It was confirmed that the drugs used in the crime were medications the suspects had been prescribed and kept for medical purposes.

The police decided to detain all three men, considering their previous convictions for fraud and the fact that one of them had already been punished for a similar crime. The first trial is currently underway. A police official stated, "So far, only one victim has been confirmed, but we believe there may be additional crimes and are continuing our investigation."
