Saemaeul Geumgo Reform Solutions Enter Full-Fledged Debate at National Assembly

Strengthening Financial Normalization and Consumer Protection
Reviewing Key Tasks for Achieving 'Vision 2030'

A policy forum was held at the National Assembly to explore financial normalization and mid- to long-term development strategies for Saemaeul Geumgo. The discussion focused on improving the supervisory system and strengthening consumer protection, with many evaluating that the debate on Saemaeul Geumgo reform has now entered the public sphere in earnest.

The National Credit Union Federation of Korea held the "Forum on Financial Normalization and Development Strategies for Saemaeul Geumgo" on the 19th at Seminar Room 2 of the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul.


This forum was jointly organized by Assemblyman Park Junghyun, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the National Credit Union Federation of Korea, with over 80 stakeholders in attendance.


The event was attended by Assemblyman Park Junghyun, Vice Minister Kim Minjae of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Chairman Kim In of the National Credit Union Federation of Korea, who shared policy directions regarding the roles and responsibilities of Saemaeul Geumgo.


Prior to the main discussion, Kim Kitae, Chairman of the Korea Cooperative Research Institute and a member of the Saemaeul Geumgo Vision 2030 Committee, delivered a keynote presentation on the "Vision 2030 Implementation Strategy."


Chairman Kim proposed three strategic areas for Saemaeul Geumgo to establish itself as a sustainable financial partner for local economies: strengthening soundness, restoring community values, and addressing local issues and balanced development. He also outlined 37 detailed tasks and implementation plans to support these strategies.


The comprehensive discussion that followed was moderated by Kim Jonggeol, Professor at Hanyang University Graduate School of International Studies and Chair of the Saemaeul Geumgo Vision 2030 Committee.


Panelists included Cho Hyekyung, Director of the Institute of Financial Economics; Kim Daeyoung, Head of Regional Financial Support at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety; Kim Jinyoung, Senior Policy Specialist of the Democratic Party Policy Committee; Moon Jinsu, Director of the Social Finance Research Institute; and Yang Sehun, Director of the GIRLFRIEND Future Policy Research Center. They exchanged views on restoring Saemaeul Geumgo's identity, achieving financial normalization, and ensuring sustainability.


The panelists diagnosed the structural challenges facing Saemaeul Geumgo amid recent changes in the financial environment, and reached a consensus on the feasibility of the Vision 2030 implementation plan and the need for policy and institutional support. In particular, rational improvements to the supervisory system and enhanced protection for financial consumers were highlighted as key tasks for restoring trust going forward.


An official from the National Credit Union Federation of Korea stated, "This forum serves as a starting point for discussing improvements to the supervisory system and institutional framework for Saemaeul Geumgo, as well as for strengthening consumer protection. We hope this will be an opportunity for Saemaeul Geumgo to solidify its foundation and take another leap forward."


Meanwhile, after the forum, participants took a commemorative photo and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation for the stable operation and sustainable development of Saemaeul Geumgo.
