A Rare Initiative in Busan:
Seeking Animal Protection Policies That Resonate With Residents
Busan Gijang County has opened a forum to strengthen animal welfare policies and is working to develop measures tailored to local conditions.
On the 22nd, Gijang County (Governor Jeong Jongbok) held a meeting of the "2025 Gijang County Animal Welfare Committee" (Chairman Lee Sungjin) at the Gijang County Office.

This was the committee's second meeting this year, where major projects related to animal welfare were explained and a wide range of welfare policies and current issues were discussed.
During the meeting, the direction for promoting animal welfare policies was shared, and opinions were exchanged to develop animal protection and welfare policies that residents can genuinely relate to. In particular, there was a consensus on the need to establish policies that simultaneously promote a culture of companion animals and strengthen animal protection.
The Gijang County Animal Welfare Committee is an organization that deliberates on projects for local animal welfare and protection, and evaluates related initiatives. It is tasked with seeking policies appropriate for local characteristics. In Busan, only two local governments, including Gijang County, operate such a committee, making it especially significant.
The county first established the committee in February this year, following the enactment of the "Ordinance on Animal Protection and Welfare in Gijang County." The committee includes county officials, members of the county council, academics, and experts from animal protection organizations, all working together to promote animal welfare through a wide range of activities.
Governor Jeong Jongbok stated, "Through the operation of the Animal Welfare Committee, we will develop customized local policies that balance animal welfare and regulation, and continue to broaden public consensus on animal protection and welfare among county residents."
