Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway Passes Preliminary Feasibility Study
Securing a Key Transportation Axis Connecting Eastern Seoul Metropolitan Area and Gangwon
1.1 Trillion Won Investment to Pave the Way for Regional Advancement
Yangpyeong County in Gyeonggi Province (Governor Jeon Jinseon) announced on the 23rd that the "Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railway Construction Project" passed the preliminary feasibility study at the Ministry of Economy and Finance's Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee on the 22nd, paving the way for the full-scale implementation of the project.
The Yongmun-Hongcheon metropolitan railway project, which has now secured its feasibility, is a single-track metropolitan railway line stretching 32.7 kilometers from Yongmun Station in Yangpyeong County to Hongcheon County in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The total project cost is estimated at approximately 1.1 trillion won. This line will be the first metropolitan railway in the Gangwon region and is regarded as a key transportation infrastructure connecting the eastern part of the Seoul metropolitan area with inland Gangwon.
Yangpyeong County explained that passing the preliminary feasibility study is expected to not only improve access to the Seoul metropolitan area for the eastern regions of Yangpyeong, including Danwol and Cheongun, but also to increase the inflow of residents, enhance conditions for tourism and settlement, and revitalize the local economy. In particular, it holds significant meaning in terms of balanced regional development through expanded transportation infrastructure and responding to the risk of local depopulation.
Jeon Jinseon, Governor of Yangpyeong County, stated, "The Yongmun-Hongcheon metropolitan railway is a long-cherished wish of Yangpyeong residents and a core project that will determine the future development of Yangpyeong. Passing the preliminary feasibility study will serve as a crucial turning point for Yangpyeong County to emerge as the central city of the eastern metropolitan area."
He added, "I would like to thank the government and related agencies for their efforts in advancing this project. Going forward, we will continue to work closely with Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and other stakeholders to ensure that the subsequent procedures proceed smoothly."
Yangpyeong County plans to actively respond to follow-up procedures such as establishing the basic plan and detailed design. In addition, the county will gradually develop strategies for station area development and regional linkage in preparation for the opening of the metropolitan railway.
