The ceremony was attended by Tang Shengyao, Head of the FAO Korea Cooperation Liaison Office; Kang Kyuseok, Vice President of the Korean Society of Forest Science; and Yoo Yongjae, Secretary General of the Jung Inwook Academic Scholarship Foundation, who offered encouragement and support to the interns.
The Global Forestry Internship Project is a program that selects outstanding talents in the forestry sector and dispatches them to overseas FAO offices. The goal is to help participants gain hands-on international forestry experience and grow into global experts.
For this 2nd term, a total of four interns were selected through fierce competition. They will be dispatched to overseas FAO offices for approximately 11 months: two to the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy; one to Mandaluyong City, Philippines; and one to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The selection process prioritized expertise and adaptability to local environments. The Korean Society of Forest Science conducted document screening and interviews, comprehensively evaluating academic suitability, language proficiency, and competencies for work at international organizations. Afterwards, the FAO local offices in the countries of assignment conducted final interviews to assess the candidates' understanding of the work and their adaptability.
During the subsequent pre-departure training, Professor Park Hyun of Seoul National University gave a special lecture, and detailed guidance was provided on the FAO’s organizational structure and internship support. In particular, graduates of the first term shared their overseas field experiences and know-how, offering practical help to the new interns.
Yoo Yongjae, Secretary General of the Jung Inwook Academic Scholarship Foundation, stated, "Recently, the importance of talents with both international perspective and field experience in the forestry sector has been growing day by day. We will continue to provide unwavering support so that young people can develop their capabilities in the global forestry field and grow into key leaders who will lead the forestry sector both at home and abroad in the future."
