Voice Navigation Alerts for High-Risk Areas of Intentional Car Accidents to Expand Nationwide from 35 to 100 Locations
On December 23, the Financial Supervisory Service announced that, in cooperation with the General Insurance Association of Korea, it will expand the number of regions where voice navigation alerts are provided to prevent intentional car accidents from the current 35 locations to 100 locations.
The plan is to expand the service starting in April next year by selecting areas with frequent intentional car accidents and providing drivers with voice alerts about the risks.
In addition to the existing TMAP and KakaoNavi, the voice alert service will also be applied to the Naver Map navigation service.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service, since the introduction of the service in July, the number of intentional accident cases has decreased by approximately 21.1%. The number of intentional accidents fell by 351 cases, from 1,662 in the first half of the year to 1,311 in the second half.
After the service expansion, voice alerts will begin 150 meters before entering areas with frequent intentional accidents, rather than just before entry. Additional pop-up alerts will also be provided for common accident types in these areas, such as lane changes and left turns.
The Financial Supervisory Service plans to work together with the General Insurance Association of Korea and the three navigation service providers to enhance the effectiveness of the voice alert service for high-risk areas by cooperating every six months.
An official from the Financial Supervisory Service stated, "We expect that expanding the service will help prevent insurance payouts lost to insurance fraud, such as intentional traffic accidents, thereby reducing social costs."
