Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Yuk Donghan) held the final briefing session for the "Chuncheon International Garden Expo Basic Concept Service" on the 18th at the city hall multipurpose conference room.
The vision for the Chuncheon International Garden Expo is "Lake of Gardens, Blossoming Chuncheon." The plan envisions a renaissance for Chuncheon by innovatively regenerating the previously stagnant land in the Sangjungdo area, bringing new vitality to the entire city.
The core of the basic concept for the garden expo is to establish three major hubs connecting Sangjungdo, Hajungdo, the city center, and Seomyeon.
The Sangjungdo and Hajungdo areas will be developed as hubs encompassing the garden industry and ecology, with a focus on industrial, demonstration, and exhibition functions in connection with the planned National Garden Material Center. The city center will be reorganized into a space where gardens become part of daily life for citizens, centering on the urban regeneration innovation district and the area around Chuncheon Station. The Seomyeon area and the western waterfront of Uiam Lake will be fostered as a hub for garden culture, combining cultural, rural landscape, and stay-type tourism.
A tour plan utilizing waterways and forest paths was also proposed. The "Water Way" is a floating garden tour connecting Sangjungdo, Hajungdo, and Seomyeon along Uiam Lake, while the "Green Way" is a walking and trekking route linking the city center and forest paths. These will be integrated into a single circulation structure called the "Garden Loop," making the journey itself a garden experience.
In addition, comprehensive proposals were made for an organizational model, certification measures and event timing review, as well as assessments of project feasibility and financial efficiency. The study was conducted with the goal of hosting the event in 2032, taking into account international event preparation procedures such as the standards set by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH).
The garden expo is not just a flower exhibition, but an international event encompassing urban ecology, culture, and tourism. The city aims to brand Chuncheon as a garden city by linking the Chuncheon Lake Garden in the Sangjungdo area and the National Garden Material Center, which is scheduled to open in 2026, with the garden expo. The goal is to establish an urban foundation where ecology, culture, and gardens are harmoniously integrated.
The city plans to use the results of this study as foundational data for the upcoming "Chuncheon International Garden Expo Basic Plan Service," and will continue to review its feasibility through relevant departments and advisory meetings.
A Chuncheon City official stated, "We will steadily realize the vision of 'Garden City Chuncheon,' where garden culture becomes part of daily life together with our citizens."
