Reinvestigation Requested for Six Executives Including Chairman Cho
The prosecution has requested supplementary investigation from the police regarding Kim Myungae, President of Dongduk Women's University, who was referred to the prosecution on charges of embezzling school funds.
On December 17, the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office announced that it had requested additional investigation from the Seoul Jongam Police Station concerning President Kim's alleged embezzlement in the course of her work. For six other executives and staff members, including Chairman Cho Wonyoung of Dongduk Academy, who were reported along with President Kim, the prosecution requested a reinvestigation.
The Women's Party filed a police complaint in December last year against President Kim and six other school executives and staff members on charges including embezzlement of school funds. According to the Private School Act, legal expenses not directly related to the education of professors or students must be borne by the school corporation. The complaint was based on the allegation that President Kim paid for legal advice and litigation costs from the school's general accounting, rather than from the corporation's funds.
In early November, the police referred President Kim and the other six school executives and staff members to the prosecution without detention, on charges of embezzlement in the course of their work and violation of the Private School Act. In response, Dongduk Women's University explained, "All of the legal expenses in question were paid only after legal counsel from an attorney verified the legitimacy of the expenditures," adding, "It is clear that these were costs related to the operation of the university, not for the president's personal matters."
