Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province held a unique marathon event where residents and youth ran together to reaffirm their commitment to practicing RE100.
On the morning of the 14th, the county successfully hosted the "2025 Yeongam RE100 Marathon" at the public parking lot near the Yeongam Wood Culture Experience Center in Gunseo-myeon. More than 300 participants, including local residents and youth, joined as "RE100 Runners" and took energetic strides forward.
Held under the slogan "Run! RE100 Opportunity City Yeongam," the event was organized by the Yeongam Energy Center and managed by the Youth RE100 Marathon Promotion Team. Notably, the idea for this event was originally proposed by students from Gurim Technical High School during the county’s roundtable meeting, adding further significance to the occasion.
Participants ran a 5-kilometer course starting from the Yeongam Wood Culture Experience Center, turning around at Sangdaepo Park and Gurim Intersection. Finishers received wooden medals, Yeongam rice, dried persimmons, and commemorative towels sponsored by HD Hyundai Samho.
At the event venue, food booths offering fish cakes, tteokbokki, and roasted sweet potatoes were popular among participants, while the "Nam Saeng-i" character photo zone, symbolizing Yeongam’s ecology, became a favorite spot for families. Participants carrying banners inscribed with "RE100 Leading City Yeongam" also drew attention.
On this day, Yeongam County Governor Woo Seunghee, Yeongam County Council Chairman Park Jongdae, and Yeongam Office of Education Superintendent Kim Gwangsu, along with other key figures, completed the course with residents, joining in the RE100 initiative. Governor Woo stated, "Yeongam is a land of energy and vitality," adding, "Together with our residents, we will vigorously move forward toward RE100 Yeongam, leading the era of energy transition."
During the event, the "Yeongam County Youth Environmental and RE100 Action Declaration Ceremony" was also held. Through their declaration, the youth pledged to actively participate in energy conservation and the transition to renewable energy, and to help create a future where the environment, energy, and industry grow together in the region.
This marathon was promoted through the collaboration of more than 10 organizations, including the county government, the Yeongam Office of Education, police, fire departments, the sports association, local businesses, and civic groups. Yeongam County and the Yeongam Energy Center plan to lead Korea’s energy transition by establishing a "local production and consumption energy self-sufficiency model" that links abundant renewable energy resources with the power demand of the Daebul National Industrial Complex, as well as through the "Energy Local Production and Consumption Green City 100" policy.
