Allegations of Bribery Involving the Democratic Party
Possibility of Presidential Involvement Raised
"Failure to Clearly State Position Only Fuels Suspicion"
As allegations of receiving money from the Unification Church continue to spread throughout the political sphere, former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon has escalated his offensive, simultaneously targeting both the Democratic Party and President Lee Jaemyung. Han has raised suspicions not only that the Democratic Party received funds from the Unification Church, but also that President Lee may have been aware of these facts in advance and either condoned or was involved in them.
On the 13th, Han questioned, "President Lee Jaemyung, did you meet with Hak Ja Han, the leader of the Unification Church? Why can't you answer?" He pointed out, "No matter how many times I ask publicly, neither President Lee nor anyone from the Democratic Party can answer." He added, "Normally, various factions within the Democratic Party, who are always eager to show excessive loyalty, would rush to attack me, insisting 'that's not true,' but now there is only silence."
Former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon has intensified his offensive by targeting both the Democratic Party and President Lee Jae-myung over allegations of receiving money from the Unification Church.
Han reiterated his question, "President Lee, did you meet with Hak Ja Han, the leader of the Unification Church? Was it you who requested the meeting?" He then asserted, "It appears you can't answer because you did meet her. This is the core of the Unification Church Gate." He further criticized, "Instead of nitpicking about searching citizens' books at the airport to expel the president of the Airport Corporation for allegedly smuggling foreign currency, it is time for President Lee to answer whether he met with the Unification Church leader and why he requested the meeting."
This line of questioning is also linked to a recently released recording during a court trial. Yoon Youngho, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, was recorded in a phone conversation with Lee, a vice president of the Unification Church, ahead of the 2022 presidential election, saying, "Even from Lee Jaemyung's side, there was a direct call to meet True Mother (Hak Ja Han, leader of the Unification Church)." This recording was played in court.
Han cited this recording as evidence, stating, "Whether or not there was a meeting with Hak Ja Han is a core issue in the Unification Church Gate scandal," and argued that President Lee's failure to clarify his position is only fueling further suspicion.
The previous day, Han also questioned, "How did President Lee know, as of December 2, that the Unification Church had testified to the special prosecutor about giving money to the Democratic Party, and why did he threaten the Unification Church?" He emphasized, "Special Prosecutor Min Jungki must be immediately subject to a search and seizure to determine whether he leaked investigative information to the Lee Jaemyung Democratic Party administration."
These questions were raised in response to President Lee's remarks at the cabinet meeting on the 2nd, where he said, "The principle of separation of church and state is truly important, but (recently) there has been a case where a religious foundation systematically and organizationally intervened in politics," and added, "Japan issued a dissolution order for a religious foundation that systematically intervened in politics."
Han pointed out that the timing of these remarks was problematic. He said, "At that time, testimony that the Unification Church had given money to the Democratic Party had not yet been made public." He argued, "It is difficult to explain why President Lee issued a warning targeting the Unification Church without prior knowledge." He went on to call for an immediate search and seizure, describing Special Prosecutor Min Jungki as "a special prosecutor subcontracted by the Democratic Party and appointed by the Democratic Party."
