Damage Continues with Collapse and Flooding of Refugee Camp Tents
Storm Byron made landfall in the Gaza Strip and Israel, causing floods that resulted in the deaths of more than 10 people.
According to Palestinian news agency WAFA on December 12 (local time), heavy rains across the Gaza Strip over the past day have left 11 people dead and many others injured.
Local residents reported that five people died when a house collapsed in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. In Gaza City, two children died due to a sudden drop in temperature.
There have also been a series of incidents involving the collapse and flooding of tents in refugee camps. Haya Umiyad, a woman living in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, appealed, "With the onset of winter, tents are desperately needed, but the prices are so high that many displaced people cannot afford them," and asked, "We urge various organizations and groups to show us compassion."
The Times of Israel reported that in Israel, heavy rains continued, and a man in his 50s in Jerusalem died of hypothermia.
The emergency response agency Magen David Adom (MDA) has been conducting rescue operations at homes isolated by flooding, including in the village of Beit Shekma.
