Expansion from 2.3m to 2.5m,
Comprehensive Upgrades to District Office Facilities
Gangnam-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Cho Sungmyung) announced on December 8 that it completed improvement work last month to widen the parking spaces at the district office building, aiming to alleviate inconvenience for visitors. This measure was implemented in response to an increase in "door ding" accidents caused by the growing size of vehicles.

From November 22, the district carried out repainting work for two weeks to expand the width of existing parking spaces from 2.3 meters to 2.5 meters. While the total number of parking spaces decreased by nine, from 119 to 110, feedback indicates that parking and getting in and out of vehicles has become much easier. With an average of around 1,300 vehicles entering and exiting the district office parking lot daily, the increased space has noticeably improved convenience for visitors.
Residents and guests who frequently visit the district office have long complained about the inconvenience caused by narrow parking spaces. There have also been consistent requests to review closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in connection with "door ding" accidents, where car doors collide.
Article 3 of the current Parking Lot Act Enforcement Rules, commonly known as the "Door Ding Prevention Act," has applied to newly built parking lots since March 2019. Although the Gangnam-gu office building, in use since 2001, is not subject to this regulation, the district voluntarily adopted the higher standard to prioritize visitor convenience.
Meanwhile, alongside the parking lot improvements, Gangnam-gu also carried out renovations to the overall environment of the district office building. The district upgraded green spaces, expanded resident convenience facilities, replaced outdated security lights and sidewalk blocks, and newly established the "Gangnam-gu Residents Hall of Fame" as a space for communication with residents. Additional features such as a wall fountain and garden-style landscaping were also created, providing a more comfortable resting area for both residents and staff visiting the office.
Gangnam-gu District Mayor Cho Sungmyung stated, "The foundation of administrative service is to carefully ensure that every resident visiting the office experiences no inconvenience," adding, "We will continue to listen to residents and pursue changes that can be felt in everyday life."
