Eco-Friendly Planters Foster Ecological Sensitivity in Children
19 Classes from 3 Elementary Schools in the District Participate
Yongsan District in Seoul (headed by Mayor Park Heeyoung) is piloting the "Creating a Forest in the Classroom" project to enhance elementary students' ecological sensitivity and environmental awareness. This initiative runs from November 11 through December, with 19 classes from three elementary schools in the district participating.
Yongsan District conducted the "Creating a Forest in the Classroom" program for 5th-grade students at Yongam Elementary School on the 11th. Provided by Yongsan District.
The program consists of up to three hands-on sessions per class. Through planting companion trees, decorating pots, and watering the plants themselves, students interact with nature and naturally learn about plant growth principles, the importance of environmental protection, and the meaning of carbon reduction.
The "Seumim Pots" used in the "Creating a Forest in the Classroom" program are eco-friendly planters made by upcycling leftover disposable mask fabric and PET bottles. These pots convey the significance of resource circulation and sustainable practices, reinforcing the environmental education message. Through this pilot operation, Yongsan District will gather feedback from the field and plans to gradually expand the project to more elementary schools in the area.
Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan District, stated, "I hope that the classroom forests cultivated by the children themselves will transform schools into ecological learning spaces where life and coexistence thrive, beyond simply being places of study. Going forward, we will continue to lead efforts in carbon neutrality and environmental education in collaboration with the local community, building Yongsan as an educational city that supports the happy growth of our students."
Meanwhile, Yongsan District is also operating the "Visiting Public Education" program, which is linked to the school curriculum, to promote balanced growth and expanded learning opportunities for students. This year, a variety of programs are being offered, including "Exciting Music Journey," "Character Building Education," "AI Classroom," "Exploring Cultural Heritage in Textbooks," "Financial Literacy Academy," and "Book-ON Reading Class."
