"Let's Protect the Earth Together"... "2025 Gwangmyeong Climate Week" Kicks Off

First Nationwide Climate Week Event Runs Until the 15th
First Local Government Climate Conference Also Held
Mayor Park Seungwon: "Planning to Establish a Resource Circulation Corporation for Waste Recycling"

The "2025 Gwangmyeong Climate Week" event, planned by Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province with the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city, opened on the 13th at the Gwangmyeong Theater.

This three-day event, running until the 15th, marks the city's second time hosting it, following last year's inaugural event, which was the first of its kind among local governments nationwide.

The city began the event with a climate conference as its first program, bringing together experts and citizens to share the achievements and direction of its carbon neutrality policies. Previously, the city held the "Town Hall COP," the first climate conference organized by a local government, last year. This year, in line with the schedule of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), the city organized the conference to discuss, together with citizens, the direction and practical strategies for responding to the climate crisis at the local government level.

At the conference, Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong City, gave a presentation titled "From Policy to Practice: Walking Together with Citizens Toward a Carbon-Neutral Gwangmyeong," introducing the city's climate policies and outlining future plans.

Mayor Park stated, "Gwangmyeong City has developed institutional foundations and policies with a focus on citizen participation to address the climate crisis," adding, "In particular, as a result of systematically pursuing greenhouse gas reduction in accordance with the first Basic Plan for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth established earlier this year, we have achieved 63.4% of this year's greenhouse gas reduction target."

Mayor Park also introduced plans to establish the "Gwangmyeong Resource Circulation Corporation," which will be responsible for waste recycling and the circular economy. He said, "By establishing the Resource Circulation Corporation, we will create a system that integrates recycling, repair, and reuse, forming a virtuous cycle where the benefits return to the citizens."

Mayor Park emphasized, "Only when local communities can implement their own energy policies can carbon neutrality bring about real change," and added, "For this, it is essential to enact a 'Special Act on Energy Decentralization' to strengthen the authority of local governments."

At the conference, Ko Jaekyung, Chairperson of the Gwangmyeong Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee; Baek Sunyoung, a member of the same committee; and Kim Seunghyun, Head of the Just Transition Division at the 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee Secretariat, shared the city's policies and progress, and held discussions with citizens.

During the event, Mayor Park Seungwon, Lee Jiseok, Chairman of the Gwangmyeong City Council, and youth representative Cha Byeolhwa read the "Climate Volunteer Declaration" together, and magician Choi Hyunwoo gave a congratulatory performance on the theme of the climate crisis.

On the second day of Climate Week, November 14, the city plans to hold a climate and human rights forum, an ESG forum, an environmental education workshop, and an energy lecture. On the final day, November 15, programs will include a citizen participation campaign, a book concert, and a closing ceremony.
