Added Bathroom Tile Cleaner to Stew
Arrested on Suspicion of Attempted Aggravated Assault
A man in his 40s has been arrested on charges of secretly adding cleaning solution to food eaten by his family.
On November 6, the Bundang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that they had detained Mr. A on suspicion of attempted aggravated assault and were currently investigating the case.
Mr. A is accused of putting tile cleaning solution into a stew intended for his wife, Ms. B, and other family members at their home in Jeongja-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, at around 11:35 p.m. on November 3.
Ms. B reported to the police before eating the food after seeing Mr. A adding something to the stew via a home camera.
Ms. B stated that she had installed the home camera because she had noticed a strange taste in the food several times and had even vomited, claiming that Mr. A may have committed similar acts in the past.
Mr. A admitted to secretly adding tile cleaning solution to the stew but insisted that this was his first time committing such an act. Regarding his motive, he stated, "I did it to prevent my wife from drinking alcohol in front of our child, as she often drinks in their presence."
The cleaning solution used by Mr. A is a product typically used for cleaning bathroom tiles. The product label lists ingredients such as glycolic acid, purified water, and surfactants, and includes a warning not to inhale or ingest it.
It is reported that Ms. B and their child, who is under the age of 10, currently show no significant health problems.
However, the police determined that the method of Mr. A's crime was serious and applied for an arrest warrant. The court held a pretrial detention hearing for Mr. A the previous day and issued the warrant.
The police have requested the National Forensic Service to analyze the ingredients of the stew to which the cleaning solution was added. They are also conducting a forensic examination of Mr. A's mobile phone and investigating whether similar crimes have been committed in the past.
